NaNoWriMo is approaching quickly – just 21 more days before it starts. Are you ready? Are you getting ready? Are you joining in on the fun?
You do know what NaNoWriMo is, right? If you don’t, it’s a month – November – when writers from all around the world join in on writing 50,000 of a novel. There’s no grand prize at the end other than, hey, guess what? You just wrote a novel! And that’s pretty cool all by itself.
Before NaNoWriMo starts, there are a bunch of things I do. I plan my story (or, sometimes, stories). I do character development, world building, and plot development. Not everyone does, and that’s fine – it doesn’t matter which approach you take as long as it works for you. But for me, I have to plan. The more I have planned, the faster and better I can write. And I love writing – primarily science fiction and fantasy for me. π
And this is why we develop writing apps – because I want them and use them. They make my life easier. We hope they make your life easier, too. π
Here are the writing apps we have on tap now. We have others planned, we’re in the middle of updates for a couple, and we have one currently in development, but these things take time. And we have some additional features we’d like to add, but those things take time, too… So…

WriteIdeas (iOS)
I don’t know about you, but I frequently have ideas for stories, characters, worlds, and more while I’m out and about. It doesn’t seem to happen much when I’m in front of the computer, but it happens when I’m in a restaurant, taking a bus or train, walking down the street, going grocery shopping, or wherever. Sure, I could keep paper and a pen in my purse, but why? I use WriteIdeas on my iPhone (or iPad or iPod).
You can assign the idea a category (character, story, plot, universe, or even business idea or character name – whatever you like), add a photo or other image, and type away. Add as much detail as you want – it can handle it. Add as many different types of ideas as you like – it can handle that, too.

WordOne and WordOne Lite (iOS)
I like tracking my writing progress. I like knowing how many words I wrote today versus how many I wrote yesterday versus how many words I have left to go to meet my writing goal.
With NaNoWriMo, the goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That’s 1,667 words to write each day in November. The way life works, today, I might be able to write 5,000 words, but tomorrow I might only be able to squeeze 800 words in. And I didn’t write quite enough yesterday, either, so… How am I doing? Am I on track? Am I going to have a major crunch at the end of the month?
WordOne tracks your writing goal, whether it’s for NaNoWriMo or not, whether it’s for 50,000 words or not. It calculates for you how many words you have to write each day to reach your goal word count of x number of words in y number of days. All you do is plunk in the goal – how many words by what date.
And each day, as you enter in the number of words you wrote that day, it calculates how many words you have left to write to reach your goal, and how many words you need to write each day.
Back to NaNoWriMo. So if I goof off entirely and don’t write a thing for the first ten days of November, I can still meet my 50,000 words written by the end of the month goal. But now, instead of having to write 1,667 words per day, I have to write 2,500 words per day. And… Well, you get the idea.

As in it’s a word processor on your iPhone/iPod/iPad, and you use it to actually type your story into your device.
