NaNoWriMo is approaching quickly – just 21 more days before it starts. Are you ready? Are you getting ready? Are you joining in on the fun?

You do know what NaNoWriMo is, right? If you don’t, it’s a month – November – when writers from all around the world join in on writing 50,000 of a novel. There’s no grand prize at the end other than, hey, guess what? You just wrote a novel! And that’s pretty cool all by itself.

Before NaNoWriMo starts, there are a bunch of things I do. I plan my story (or, sometimes, stories). I do character development, world building, and plot development. Not everyone does, and that’s fine – it doesn’t matter which approach you take as long as it works for you. But for me, I have to plan. The more I have planned, the faster and better I can write. And I love writing – primarily science fiction and fantasy for me. πŸ™‚

And this is why we develop writing apps – because I want them and use them. They make my life easier. We hope they make your life easier, too. πŸ™‚

Here are the writing apps we have on tap now. We have others planned, we’re in the middle of updates for a couple, and we have one currently in development, but these things take time. And we have some additional features we’d like to add, but those things take time, too… So…

Without further ado, here’s a roundup of all the writing apps we currently offer.

WriteIdeas (iOS)

WriteIdeas iOS app iconI don’t know about you, but I frequently have ideas for stories, characters, worlds, and more while I’m out and about. It doesn’t seem to happen much when I’m in front of the computer, but it happens when I’m in a restaurant, taking a bus or train, walking down the street, going grocery shopping, or wherever. Sure, I could keep paper and a pen in my purse, but why? I use WriteIdeas on my iPhone (or iPad or iPod).

You can assign the idea a category (character, story, plot, universe, or even business idea or character name – whatever you like), add a photo or other image, and type away. Add as much detail as you want – it can handle it. Add as many different types of ideas as you like – it can handle that, too.

And bonus! Because you have WriteIdeas on your iPhone or iPad, which goes with you everywhere you go anyway, WriteIdeas also goes with you everywhere you go, ready for you to enter more ideas.
What could be better? πŸ™‚

WordOne and WordOne Lite (iOS)

WordOne iOS app iconI like tracking my writing progress. I like knowing how many words I wrote today versus how many I wrote yesterday versus how many words I have left to go to meet my writing goal.

With NaNoWriMo, the goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That’s 1,667 words to write each day in November. The way life works, today, I might be able to write 5,000 words, but tomorrow I might only be able to squeeze 800 words in. And I didn’t write quite enough yesterday, either, so… How am I doing? Am I on track? Am I going to have a major crunch at the end of the month?

WordOne tracks your writing goal, whether it’s for NaNoWriMo or not, whether it’s for 50,000 words or not. It calculates for you how many words you have to write each day to reach your goal word count of x number of words in y number of days. All you do is plunk in the goal – how many words by what date.

And each day, as you enter in the number of words you wrote that day, it calculates how many words you have left to write to reach your goal, and how many words you need to write each day.

Back to NaNoWriMo. So if I goof off entirely and don’t write a thing for the first ten days of November, I can still meet my 50,000 words written by the end of the month goal. But now, instead of having to write 1,667 words per day, I have to write 2,500 words per day. And… Well, you get the idea.

WordOne allows you to track your writing progress on an unlimited number of projects while WordOne Lite allows you to track your writing progress on one project and is free. And if you start out with WordOne Lite and decide you want to use it with more projects, you can. Just buy WordOne, then use the built-in export functionality to bring your data from WordOne Lite into WordOne. Easy peasy!

WriteOn and WriteOn Lite (iOS)

writeon-app-icon-round-x512WriteOn and WriteOn Lite are for using your iPhone, iPod, or iPad for writing your novel/short story/poem/novelette/novella/whatever. As in it’s a word processor on your iPhone/iPod/iPad, and you use it to actually type your story into your device. WriteOn allows for an unlimited number of projects while WriteOn LiteΒ is free and allows for one project. And if you start out with WriteOn Lite to test out the functionality, it’s easy to export that data into WriteOn after you’ve purchased it and installed it on your device.

Imagine you’re going to a write-in during November for NaNoWriMo. You have to go straight from work/visiting your mother/having lunch with friends, and you don’t want to lug your notebook computer with you. But you do have an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, so you want to use that instead. So what do you do? Why, you install WriteOn or WriteOn Lite, of course! What could be easier?

Or you have an appointment and you’re sitting in a lobby waiting on other people. Or you’re taking the bus or train to or from work. Or you’re at at a restaurant waiting for your significant other or best friend. Instead of playing mindless games, you can use that downtime to write a few hundred words in your story. Human battles alien on a distant moon! Star-crossed lovers meet under a shooting star. A woman goes behind enemy lines to free her family… Whatever the story, you need to write whenever inspiration hits! WriteOn and WriteOn Lite fit the bill!

WriteOn also tracks how many words you wrote on a project just like WordOne, and you can share your writing progress to your various social media accounts like Twitter, Facebook, and so on. It doesn’t matter whether you wrote in just one chapter or in five chapters. The app tracks your words written regardless. You can reorder your chapters if you think things need re-arranging…

It’s a fantastic little writing app that you can carry around in your pocket or purse so you can write from anywhere, anytime.
